Then

TRINA NEEDED TO be alone. To find time to think. She had no idea what to think or feel about everything she’d discovered about Nassir. To put it mildly, the sudden, unexpected news of Nassir’s title had thrown her for a loop. Not to mention the fact that she could have possibly been murdered. She shuddered. Her mind was still trying to catch up.

The flight back to the States felt agonizingly long, since Trina and Nassir had sat mainly in silence, each brooding in their own thoughts. She had asked him to cancel the remainder of their getaway, claiming fatigue, and reminding him that she had to go back to work the next day, but they both knew what was standing between them.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked suddenly.

“When I’m with you, I can be myself. I forget all about familial duties and the constraints that it comes with. You make me feel real,” Nassir said. “And I wanted to hold on to that for as long as I could.”

She had no idea how to respond to that admission. Internally, she was in turmoil. Her mind spun, going over what he’d told her. She had no idea what it felt like to be in his shoes, but she knew that she wouldn’t have kept something so important a secret. Who knew what else he was hiding at this point? Ultimately, Trina decided she was a sucker. She couldn’t believe she’d allowed herself to be strung along by a man she hardly knew.

She hadn’t even researched his country. Even their potential murderers had Googled Nassir to verify what he was saying. Why hadn’t she asked more questions? But she knew the answer to that. She hadn’t done her due diligence in obtaining a basic background check because she had been pulled by his goddamn charm. She’d allowed that air of mystery surrounding him to tempt her and suck her in.

Never again, she told herself. No more tall, dark, and mysterious men for her.

At least the criminal menace had been dealt with. The three men who invaded the villa had been handed over to the local police, hauled off in cuffs and accompanied by one pissed-off bodyguard.

Trina hoped they’d be there a long time, and that the Mexican government threw the book at them for what they had done. If they never saw another day of freedom, she wouldn’t mind. No way anyone should be allowed to traumatize people like that, to threaten their lives, and get away with it. She was still having flashbacks of the terror hours later and was sure she would have to endure aftershocks for some time to come.

Nassir dropped her off outside her apartment, and she was relieved that he didn’t ask to come inside. They sat in the back seat for a moment, looking at each other, wondering who would speak first.

He took her hand, a gentle, reassuring caress. “Are you going to be okay?”

“Mm-hmm,” she answered, but wasn’t sure she ever would. She also wished he wouldn’t touch her.
